I Like to Hear What You Have To Say.

I really enjoy our classroom discussions. I feel as though my sense of humor slips in all too often and it offends some people so I'm working on editing that. It's a nervous habit I have sometimes that can get me into trouble. However, I do feel like some of the emotion should be taken out of our discussions. We're all just trying to figure out what we ourselves believe, and a lot of that should be a reflection of the opinions we hear from our peers, including those we do not agree with. Taking an opposing view personally isn't really how discussions should go. If the person stating their opposing view turns it into a personal attack then that is understandable, but a general "I think this instead.." should only heat up the discussion--not hinder it. I know sometimes I think people are only talking to me when they say things that I disagree with but that's something I need to get over. Thank God we live in a place where we can all have differing opinions, right?

  2. I agree completely. I know that I am definitely guilty of taking some of the comments personal. I try to stay objective in class. However, it is hard because most of the time I try to sit there and listen and eventually I start to feel like a lot of what I stand for is being belittled. It is hard to be objective on something that I am so subjective about in my everyday life. My life and all of my actions revolve around my faith and belief in God and my belief that the Bible is the final word of my Savior that lacks contradiction or fabriations. I think sometimes I do a pretty good job of just contributing to conversation, while other times, such as last class, I let my emotions come forth in my responses.

  4. To Stephanie, you have every right to take something such as the Bible personally especially when its something that taints Christ's teachings and what He stood for. I dont think your reaction to the conversation was that radical enough to set of an alarm. You were not only defending Christ's teachings and your beliefs but Christ Himself, which in my eyes is a true testament to your faith and commitment to Him. That is actually what you are supposed to do. I know I took the conversation personal as well, not just because Im a Christian and love Christ as u do, but obviously because I am African American. Those were my ancestors and my forefathers who were enslaved, killed, beaten, lynched, etc all in the name of God? So yeah its offensive and yeah I took it personal because it simply wasn't right.....taking something sacred, tainting it, and twisting it to oppress minorities such as African Americans.....That goes for all minorities, i.e., women, etc.

Overall, there is nothing wrong with people expressing their opinions & I really didn't notice that something was wrong with the class discussion. Emotions were present but no one was called any names or slapped, so I thought it was an interesting conversation?! I think everyone did a decent job in keeping their composure!
